Upper North Platte River Fishing Report

Flows at Northgate: 836 cfs

Flows at North Brush Creek: 30.5 cfs

Flows into Seminoe Reservoir: 1380 cfs

The Upper North Platte River near Saratoga, Wyoming has truly been fishing the best we’ve seen in years. In fact, thanks to high water flows trout are fat, healthy, and happy!  We have been putting 30-40 fish in the boat  with experienced anglers.  On the other hand, beginners have also done great thanks to our years of experience on the river.

Best Flies To Use

Two fly nymph rigs under an indicator have been standard for numbers of fish. 3x and 4x tapered leaders with bb lead split shot.  6-8 foot length.  Big articulated streamers fished on the swing have also been very productive, and target big trophy trout. 3-4 foot P-Line 12-14 lb fluorocarbon leader.  Float and sink tip lines.

Typically near the end of July into the first few weeks of August.  The Trico hatch usually starts up providing anglers with great morning dry fly fishing! Fishing small size 16-22 Parachute Adams.  Purple Haze. As well as, Trico spinners and sunken Trico patterns, are going to be the ticket.  This time of year, anglers can fish dry flies, nymphs, and streamers all in one day!

Water temps have been staying cool throughout the night and mornings in the 40-55 degree range.  With the dog days of summer upon us, days are heating up.  As a result, with dropping water flows, please do your part and check water temps.  Consequently, temps in the 60’s and 70’s are not good for fishing.  Please practice steward of the land techniques and be sure fish are revived and able to be released properly. The Upper North Platte river near Saratoga, Wyoming has been dropping and clearing.  We are now past peak run off.  In fact, last weekend the river peaked out at Northgate with 8000 cfs!  Fishing conditions are improving by the day.  As a result, Salmon flies and Green Drakes are starting to hatch regularly.  Consequently, trout are fat, healthy, and happy.  Fishing is the best we’ve seen in years!

Hatches are heavier than normal with the big water flows everywhere this year!  Caddis. Grey and Green Drakes. Pale Morning Duns.  Just to name a few!

We have had productive fishing using big stonefly nymph patterns, such as Pats rubber legs.  Double bead peacock stones.  As well as, Halfbacks.  Big Salmon fly dries such as Amys Ants.  Chubby Chernobyls. Sofa Pillow style foam stones are also hot! Hares ear and Prince nymphs also working well on a dropper rig.  Articulated streamers are also getting ambushed off the swing. Trout are pushed up against the banks with 2-3 feet water clarity.  Our preferred method!

Diamond Lake Fishing Report

Diamond Lake has been fishing great all spring and early summer.  Lake levels are full thanks to 128% snowpack in the high country for 2019.  We are excited to announce that Diamond Lake has bounced back to its former glory!  Rainbow and Cutthroat trout are averaging  18-20 inches.  In fact, with trophy regulations and excellent trout habitat,fish are fat, healthy and happy! Furthermore, all of the Laramie Plains Lakes in general, have not had any major winter kill events.  We have had very productive fishing at all of them.

The Big Laramie River near Woods Landing, Wyoming has been fishing great during pre run off conditions.  Currently, it is safe to say that the river is high and blown out.  The City of Laramie has issued flood warnings within the city for affected infrastructure.  However, it seems as though we may have passed the peak run off.  As of today, current stream flows at the Laramie USGS gauge are 750 cfs.    Please check flows here before your outing.  https://waterdata.usgs.gov/wy/nwis/uv/?site_no=06660000&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060,00010

 

The sole purpose of this updated fishing report is to announce the Grey Drake hatch.  This much anticipated event usually occurs the end of June into the first few weeks of July.  Similarly, just like the Green Drake hatch on the Encampment River.  Every trout in the river is looking up!  In addition to the high water, we have seen a ton of fish gorging themselves the past few days.  The river conditions and clarity improve by the day.

 

Common flies to use on the upper reaches of the Big Laramie are Caddis.  Golden Stonefly nymphs.  Salmon fly nymphs.  Stimulators. Most anglers would assume that these flows would be too high for productive fishing.  Although wade fishing is tough, float fishing is perfect!  Big fish have been stacking in seams that are only accessible from a drift boat.  Similarly, float fishing allows for the long drifts required to get your flies down.  Don’t let high water flows discourage you from fishing.  We anticipate great float fishing conditions all season long.

Salmon flies have been hatching sporadically.  As a result, stonefly nymphs such as Halfbacks. Pats rubber legs. Double bead peacock stonefly nymphs have been the ticket!  San Jaun worms.  Rock worms.  Squirmy worms in red, pink, and purple.   Chubby Chernobyl and Sofa Pillow style Salmon fly dry flies. Encampment River Fishing Report:

The Encampment River has been fishing great during pre run off conditions.  With a very wet spring so far, stream flows have been fluctuating.  Current flows are at 2720 cubic feet per second at mouth, near the rainbow hole coming into the North Platte.  Please check daily stream flows before your outing. https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?06625000

Its safe to say that as of today, the river is high and blown out.  However, flows for the entire North Platte River basin will be clearing and dropping soon.  We anticipate plenty of water to float on during the Green Drake hatch this year.  The Green Drake hatch is, by far the most notable hatch on the Encampment River.  This highly anticipated event usually occurs during late June throughout July.  Its an awesome spectacle to watch trout follow the hatch as it progresses upstream from the North Platte.

The Encampment in general doesn’t get a ton of fishing pressure.  As a result, there’s really no need to overthink fly patterns.  Presentation, along with good drifts with out drag, is most important.  All of your standard dry flies such as Elk Hair Caddis.  Stimulators.  Green Drake Cripple. Foam terrestrial patterns with nymph droppers are also very productive.  Big Stonefly nymphs, such as Pats rubber legs.  Double Bead Peacock Stonefly nymphs.  Hot bead Halfback nymphs are also perfect for imitating the big bugs.

We anticipate most river and streams to drop and clear by June 15. Which is typical for this time of year.  Unfortunately, recent snow and rain storms have pushed stream flows back up.  Check the USGS waterflow data for the North Platte River basin before your outing. https://waterdata.usgs.gov/wy/nwis/current/?type=flow

Miracle Mile and Grey Reef are not affected by run off conditions.  Additionally, with our years of experience fishing Wyoming waters. We know all the hot spots!  Please feel free to contact us at 307-399-9464 regarding current fishing conditions.

Alternatively, now is a great time to fish the Laramie Plains Lakes.  Reports are that all of them are fishing great!  Some to keep in mind are Lake Hattie.  Twin Buttes Reservoir.  Meeboer Lake.  Diamond Lake.  Alsop Lake.  As well as, Wheatland 3 Reservoir.

Hot flies for lake fishing are hot head balanced leeches.  Pine squirrel leeches.  Damsel fly nymphs.  Callibaetis nymphs.  As well as, bead head Prince nymphs. Hare ear nymphs.  Lake Chironomid patterns such as the  red Candy Cane. Wine color San Jaun worms are also producing big fish.

Saratoga Wyoming Fishing Report-North Platte River:

We recently took a trip to Saratoga and floated from Treasure Island to Saratoga. To our surprise, the water clarity was great with pre run off conditions. Visibility towards the banks was 1-2 feet, perfect for chucking streamers.

One thing we love about the Upper North Platte is the solitude. We had the river all to ourselves. As usual, we caught fish on dries,nymphs, and streamers.

The baetis or Blue Wing Olive hatch came off strong during mid afternoon. We came upon some stretches where the river looked like it was boiling from all of the rise forms.  Midges where also hatching off like crazy!

Snow pack for the Wyoming/Colorado high country is at 128%. We anticipate great float conditions for the whole summer on the Upper North Platte. Last year in 2018, the river dropped drastically after June 15th.

Luckily, with our years of experience, we know stretches that fish great during low flow periods. We also fish the tail waters Miracle Mile and Grey Reef when the upper reaches are blown out.

2019 Lake Hattie Fishing Report:

Lake Hattie has fishable open water thanks to the Wyoming wind the past few days. Rainbow trout are gearing up for the spring spawn. Egg sacks and egg patterns are popular among bait fisherman this time of year. Dead sticking balanced leeches and midge patterns under an indicator is a proven tactic with fly fisherman. Therefore, our custom balanced Tui Chub and egg sucking leeches have been super productive since ice off. Similarly, red and purple chironomids, such as the Candy Cane larva are very productive.

Spin fisherman are tearing it up with an assortment of Rapalas, and spoons.  As well as, spinners like Panther Martins and Rooster Tails. Furthermore, our favorite color variation is black/yellow body, with a gold spoon Panther Martin.

The Mile is fishing great! Stream flows are fluctuating at 500 cfs. Pre spawn rainbows are starting to stage up from Pathfinder Reservoir. Two fly nymph rigs with small bugs and egg patterns have been the ticket.

Scuds,red and brown midges,leeches,and emerger patterns are on the menu. Therefore, look for small baetis (Blue wing olive) coming off on days above 40 degrees. We have been swinging big streamers down below the bridge in slower water. Which, in turn, has produced some nice brown trout. Out of respect for one of the finest tail water fisheries in the world, please be mindful of rainbow trout spawning beds. Its simply not worth it.

Current snowpack in the high country of Colorado/Wyoming is at 128%. We anticipate plenty of water to play on this summer.  We are permitted to run the entire North Platte River system from the Wyoming/Colorado border all the way to Alcova, Wyoming. 240 miles.  Great for overnight and multiple day trips upstream from Miracle Mile.
